New Trams in Schwabing

New Trams in Schwabing While other European cities focus on expanding their underground or bus service, Munich has built a reputation for continued expansion and maintenance of its environmentally-friendly tram system. Last summer saw the cleaning of lines 12, and 27, and now lines 17 and 18 are undergoing work. In the midst of all this cleaning, the city recently announced the creation of an entirely new line in northern Schwabing. Plans for tram line 23 have been in the works since 1997, when MVG decided to extend the transportation system to service Parkstadt Schwabing. This urban renewal project is bordered by Leopoldstrasse in the West and the A9 in the East. The new line will run north from M√ľnchener Freiheit along Leopoldstrasse, before crossing the Mittlerer Ring on a new suspension bridge that will also offer space for pedestrians and cyclists. New rails along Parzivalstrasse will provide a link from the existing tram hub at Scheidplatz. Work has already begun, and is expected to be finished by 2009.
