Restless Earth

Perhaps Mother Earth has been in a fickle mood these past few years: Disturbing footage of tsunamis, earthquakes, and bush fires seems to dominate the airwaves and newsstands. Whether we actually are experiencing more natural disasters, or the media is just covering them more intently, no one can deny the awesome power of the planet we call home. A new exhibit at the Museum Mensch und Natur in Schloss Nymphenburg explores “Restless Earth: Natural Disasters and their Risks,” until July 8. A variety of interactive stations help visitors reach some understanding of the overwhelming natural events. An earthquake simulator, for example, gives some sense of what it was like to experience historic quakes, while seismographs and models explain how such disasters can occur. Visitors can touch a piece of meteorite like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs and initiated the Ice Age. Experts stand on hand to answer any questions.
