Man of the House

According to a new exhibit at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, metrosexuality is hardly a recent cultural phenomenon. In the 18th century, upper-class men used facial powder, makeup, and even artificial calf pads to make themselves more aesthetically pleasing. They dressed in satin knickers, wore intricately embroidered housecoats, and were never seen without a wig or cap. A selection of such items is on display at the museum through September, as part of a themed cycle on “Fashion Rituals” showcasing items from their clothing collection. Be on the lookout for upcoming exhibits on women’s and children’s attire.
